Positive Recognition System

Practices to Recognise and Reinforce Student Achievement

The following practices have been developed to encourage students to develop a positive attitude to their work.  These awards are given for sincere effort and attitude, as well as academic or sporting achievement.  In addition to these, many teachers reward positive behaviour in a variety of ways, i.e. incentives, stamps, stickers, etc. 

Achievement Awards (Birrong Bluey)

Awarded by any teacher to any student deserving of recognition.

Certificates of Merit

Awarded to any student who earns 10 Achievement Awards.

Grey Assembly Awards

Awarded to any student who deserves recognition for a specific task or effort.

Bronze Award

Awarded to any student who earns five Certificates of Merit.

Silver Award

Awarded to any student who has a Bronze Award and earns a further five Certificates of Merit.

Gold Awards

1st Awarded to any student who has a Silver Award and earns a further five Certificates of Merit.

2nd Awarded to any student who has one Gold Award and earns a further five Certificates of Merit.  Student also receives school pen/ruler.

3rd Awarded to any student who has two Gold Awards and earns a further five Certificates of Merit.  Student also receives a school water bottle.

Platinum Awards

1st Awarded to any student who has a 3rd Gold Award and earns a further five Certificates of Merit.

2nd Awarded to any student who has one Platinum Award and earns a further five Certificates of Merit.  Student also receives a school badge.

3rd Awarded to any student who has two Platinum Awards and earns a further five Certificates of Merit.  Student is invited to lunch with the Principal.

Birrong Blue Award

Awarded to students behaving appropriately, using appropriate respect and responsibility, each semester. Comment to be included on Student Progress Report indicating this achievement.

Principal's Award

Awarded to students nominated by class teachers each semester with Student Progress Reports.

House Points

Awarded to Years 3-6 students for effort in any area.  Points are recorded weekly and a trophy is given to the winning House at the end of the year.

Commendation at Assemblies

With the exception of Achievement Awards, all awards are presented at assemblies.

Annual Presentation Ceremony

At this ceremony, awards are presented to students for:

  • Academic Achievement
  • Sporting Achievement
  • Service to the School
  • Community awards and scholarships

Student achievement is also widely recognised in the wider community through:

  • Local media
  • School newsletter
  • Parent/teacher interviews
  • Teacher-requested interviews
  • Sending of students to Executive for commendation
